…….posted 07/12/10: Back by popular demand of the Youth Leadership - This first trip of the year will be to the hugely-popular St Clements Island. We will camp on an island only accessible by boat. This is the site of the first landing by European settlers in Maryland and the site of the first-ever Catholic mass in the “new world” – for this reason it was visited by the Pope on his last visit to the United States. This is an easy ½ mile walk to our campsite, but it is a chance to test out your backpacking preparations that will be needed for later trips. …….posted 07/12/10: This is a beautiful backpacking trip on a relatively flat section of the Appalachian Trail in Maryland. Highlights will be over-nighting in the Ed Garvey shelter (a nice two-story shelter with fireplace, latrine, and spring), a Sunday breathtaking view at Weaverton Cliffs overlooking the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers, and after plummeting down a series of switchbacks concluding at the “Coke Diner” in Harpers Ferry for a good lunch Sunday. A long-hike option will be offered for the iron-men of the Troop. Flyer will be posted when approved by the Youth Leadership.

¨ 2010 Sat May 1 – Sun May 2: CANOE TRIP – SHENANDOAH RIVER

…….posted 10/03/09: Planning is in progress. Flyer will be posted when available. This is a fabulous trip we do every so often that is suitable for Scouts and their adventurous family members. Several areas of mild rapids are involved and the likelihood of getting dunked or otherwise wet is high. We avail ourselves of a professional outfitter, who provides us with canoes and all of the required safety equipment and basic training, and transports us to a convenient put-in point on the Shenandoah River. We canoe for a good portion of the day and arrive at a pre-determined campsite for the night. Troop vehicles will be pre-positioned at the campsite with all of our night’s camp equipment. Sunday morning we set off again on the river for a modest trip that takes us to our pre-arranged take-out point. Scouts must have passed the BSA Swim Test (First Class swim requirement) or else be accompanied by a qualified swimming parent who rides in the same boat and assumes personal responsibility for the Scout. Participation by siblings is possible if under the responsibility of a qualified swimming parent and with the Scoutmaster’s approval. There are 8 layers of safety requirements for everyone associated with this trip, including the mandatory proper wearing of personal flotation devices (life jackets) by all youth and adult participants at all times when on the water.

Scout families, including Senior WEBELOS and other prospective Scouts and their families, are welcome – this is the trip for you. If we are lucky in our quest for reservations we will be at the Little Bennett primitive site that is located a few miles from the family campground and offers the feel of a truly primitive campout (once you drive to the site on a dirt road and get out of your car). Minimal conveniences include picnic tables, fire rings, large group fire ring, and porta-johns.

We drive to the eastern edge of Shenandoah National Park in northern Virginia, backpack a short distance, set up primitive camp, and then climb Old Rag Mountain, with day-packs only, on a wonderful circuit hike. This circuit hike is famous as one of the best day hikes, or maybe the best day hike, on the East Coast. The hike is unique in the middle-Atlantic region in that a large portion of the climb is on exposed rock with panoramic views. Much of the terrain is covered with large boulders. One climbs over, under, around rocks, and even through tunnels. No technical climbing skills are required and the trip is ok for folks who are uncomfortable with heights. The hike is strenuous, however almost all youth find it to be a breeze. Mature individuals will find it a real workout if not in good shape and most adults need a helping hand in a couple areas navigating awkward bolder scrambles. Scouts are always available and happy to give a helping hand.

*** NOTICE: Snowpalooza 1, Ski Trip 0. The complete Ski Trip has been canceled due to the recent blizzard. Friday, the Governor of Maryland declared a snow emergency and requested citizens to avoid non-essential driving until the snow end on Saturday evening. As of Saturday evening, authorities are still requesting that citizens avoid non-essential driving and some drivers involved in transporting Scouts to this event are unable to venture out of their neighborhoods due to unplowed streets. ***

We leave early Saturday morning so as to be able to spend the bulk of the day skiing or snow boarding. We are hosted by a Troop parent who works at Liberty, which is just a little over an hour away. Snow Sports merit badge and instruction in skiing/boarding are offered. All equipment can be rented at Liberty. We spend the night in a nearby motel and enjoy more skiing/boarding on Sunday.

This is a multi-district, cold-weather, Camporee, involving 2-dozen or more Troops/Crews, that takes place annually at Little Bennett Regional Park in northern Montgomery County. The purpose is to have fun while learning and practicing the skills of winter camping. Participating Troops/Crews construct sleds to haul gear during the day’s challenge activities and later to be used in races. Activities consist of rotating through 2-dozen activity stations – each of which has a different challenge. It is usually the coldest time of the year in our area, but with the proper preparation comfortable camping can be accomplished. If we are lucky there will be snow. WEBELOS are invited to attend on Saturday for the day.

¨ Medical Form Class 1 & 2 - For persons under age 40 attending regular summer camp and not engaging in High-Adventure activities. Note: If the Scoutmaster or you have a medical form from a previous year, for which a medical professional has signed based on a health examination within 3 years of camp date, then the parent only needs to complete and sign the first part of the new form (the Class 1 part, which is the first page and the top of the second page). Check with the Scoutmaster. This is the one for Scouts going to Bowman.

¨ Medical Form Class 3 - For persons age 40 and over attending regular summer camp or any person engaged in High-Adventure activities, except Northern Tier (see below). This is the one for adults & Scouts going to Lenhok’sin.

¨ Northern Tier Medical Form - Special form for youth & adults who are attending Northern Tier Canoeing.

(Northern Tier Med Form will be accepted by Lenhok’sin & Bowman. Med Form Class 3 will be accepted at Bowman.)
